Fluoride Dangers Focus of Holistic Moms Meeting
7:30 p.m., December 6
Dr. Susan Rubin
Dentist turned food educator Dr. Susan Rubin will present Fluoride and Sugar Secrets at the next meeting of Holistic Moms, which will take place at 7:30 p.m., December 6, at the Rye Free Reading Room. Rubin will discuss the climbing rate of tooth decay in children, family strategies for preventing tooth decay, and the history and health issues involved with adding fluoride to our tap water.
Among her major assertions is that children under 12 months shouldn’t ingest fluoridated water, as they are highly vulnerable to fluoride toxicity.
“Due to their small size, infants receive up to 400 percent more fluoride per pound of body weight than adults consuming the same level of fluoride in water,” she says. “Not only do infants receive a larger dose, they have an impaired ability to excrete fluoride through their kidneys.”
Even ardent pro-fluoride dental organizations have expressed similar concerns, she says. In 1994, the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry reversed their decades-long policy of recommending that doctors prescribe fluoride supplements to newborns.
“While these organizations have refrained from taking the obvious step of recommending that fluoridated water not be added to infant formula—a practice that exposes infants to nearly four times more fluoride than supplements—a growing number of prominent dental researchers have made this recommendation,” Rubin says.
