Local Relay for Life Events Set for May and June 2012: Find locations and dates in Westchester and Putnam

Cancer survivors getting ready to walk the Survivor Lap at the Relay For Life of Mahopac in 2011

During May and June thousands of local residents will participate in one of the largest fundraising events in the world, the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Teams small and large will walk around tracks at high schools and parks throughout Putnam and Westchester in an effort to show support for cancer survivors, remember lost loved ones and fight for cures. Funds raised by Relay for Life events and participants support patients who have been diagnosed with cancer as they undergo treatment and cope with the many aspects of battling the disease.

Relay events are packed with family-friendly activities and entertainment. The Relay For Life of Mahopac, one of the largest in the region, hosts live music, complimentary fitness and wellness services for survivors and 24 hours of themed contests and laps. A hallmark of the Relay ceremony is the evening luminaria service. “To this day I remember the first time I left my house without my wig was to attend Relay,” says cancer survivor and Mahopac event co-chair Heather Strickland. “I was standing by myself watching thousands of glowing candles illuminating the track, and it took my breath away.”
