My love affair with food has taken me to many places in search of good eats and healthy treats. As a holistic chef and native island girl with a passion for full flavor and spices, I’m delighted to live in New York, which is full of amazing food—much of it at reasonable prices. Such is the case with By the Way Bakery.

I discovered this delightful place during a recent ride home on Metro North, when I struck up a conversation with a stranger (as I usually do) about good desserts around town. In particular, I was eager to find a great local bakery that sold gluten-free treats and spared me the trek to Manhattan. My friendly seatmate mentioned that there was a brand new business in Hastings on Hudson that met my criteria: By the Way Bakery.

One gloomy evening I decided to visit this new bakery and grab a cheer-me-up treat. I arrived after hours and they were closed, but the aroma of sheer deliciousness seeping through the quaint window convinced me to come back and taste what they had to offer. When I returned, a cheerful pint-sized woman with a big heart and an easy smile offered me a cupcake and the rest was history.

By the Way Bakery offers delectable pastries to satisfy the sweet tooth of anyone in the gluten-free category. Nestled in the heart of downtown Hastings on Hudson, this little bakery offers cupcakes, cakes, scones, muffins (my personal favorite is blueberry) and more made with gluten-free flours and no dairy. Owner Helen Godin opened the business after spending several years as a prominent attorney, and her passion for food drives the care and quality of everything she makes. The baked goods are made fresh, from scratch, with many ingredients sourced from local farmers. Godin delights in using the best ingredients, from Callibaut Belgian chocolate to Madagascar Vanilla extract. The results? Superb.

The next time you crave a delicious treat that will leave you with no regrets, drop into By the Way Bakery and tell them that Chef Natasha referred you.
