Stewards of Earth's Bounty: McEnroe Organic Farm

McEnroe Organic Farm

The McEnroe and Durst families of McEnroe Organic Farm in Millerton, NY, run a large family farm that is “diversified in all phases, from soil to plants to animals,” says partner Ray McEnroe. Their marketing is diversified, as well; they are both retailers and wholesalers of soil, compost, plants, and animals. What’s important to the families is “to produce real, clean food—no GMOs,” McEnroe says. And everything produced at the farm is certified organic.

A beautiful day trip from Westchester, McEnroe Organic Farm is a one-stop organic destination: a farm, restaurant, market and resource center on 1,000 acres in Dutchess County. Make sure to arrive hungry, because the kitchen serves breakfast, lunch and takeout, including vegetarian dishes and burgers and barbecued McEnroe meats.  (There’s both inside and outside seating.) Walk off your meal by taking a self-directed tour through several educational stations at the farm. Before heading home, you can stock up on organic items in McEnroe Market, which sells the farm’s own products as well as those from other local farms. Organic first and local second is the families’ intention for the market, McEnroe says. “Any products that we bring in, we to try to make sure they’re non-GMO and hopefully different products than what you’re going to see at a regular grocery store,” he says.

Because educating the next generation of farmers is important to the families, they offer farm tours, field trips and apprenticeships. They also host a summer farm camp for kids, now in its second year, overseen by Jason Schwartz.

Open seven days a week, McEnroe Market is located at 5409 Rte. 22, Millerton, NY. For more info, call 518.789.3252 and visit McEnroeOrganicFarm.com.
