Functional Medicine in Scarsdale: with Dr. Joon Lee, Medical Director at Scarsdale Integrative Family Medicine

Sep 05, 2014 03:35PM

Dr. Joon Lee, Medical Director at Scarsdale Integrative Family Medicine, provides functional medicine and patient-centered care. Lee is also a certified acupuncturist, and board certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Holistic and Integrative Medicine.

“At Scarsdale Integrative Family Medicine, we bring the patient into the discovery process,” says Lee. “We take into consideration the unique makeup of each patient, together with such internal matters as mind, body and spirit, and such external factors as the physical and social environment, all of which affect total ‘functioning.’”

Lee notes that the number of patients suffering from chronic diseases, mental illness and such autoimmune disorders as rheumatoid arthritis are on the rise, and that most medical care in America is oriented toward acute care diagnosis and treatment. “This approach lacks the proper methodology and tools for preventing and treating complex, chronic disease,” says Lee. “It does not take into account the unique genetic makeup of each individual or factors such as exposure to toxins and other aspects of today’s lifestyle.”

Functional Medicine has begun to make inroads into the consciousness of U.S. health care consumers, as more people become aware of the impact of lifestyle and environment on health. “Maybe Dr. Jeffrey Bland, the father of Functional Medicine, put it best when he said, ‘We can now start to see the future of health care and medicine more clearly. We are moving from a medicine for the average to a medicine for the individual,’” says Lee.
