Local Organic Coffee Business Taking Off in Westchester

Kevin Dart

Big Bang Coffee Roasters, a family-owned business in its third year in Westchester, is now selling its fresh-roasted, fair-trade, organic coffee beans at The Outpost, 1 Court Street, Bedford, NY, and at Plum Plums, 72 Westchester Avenue, Pound Ridge, NY. The beans are also available wholesale and for home delivery.

Elina Dart, owner of Big Bang Coffee Roasters, says she is as passionate about supporting farmers and the environment as she is about serving her customers. “All my coffee is fair trade and organic certified when I buy it,” she says. “My bags are compostable, and I am working on sourcing compostable cups. I am extremely committed to improving the quality of life for our farmers all over the world, and I’m extremely committed to improving the quality of life for the consumer by serving delicious coffee that is also environmentally friendly, so we can all enjoy it for a long time.”

Big Bang carries eight varieties of beans, including two original blends, eight single-origin coffees and one decaf. Dart says the Sumatra Ketiara, grown by an all-women’s co-op, “has quickly become everyone’s new favorite cup. It’s rich and full, but it isn’t bold or spicy, which is what Sumatra is customarily known for.” The Peruvian Decaf—a single-origin bean decaffeinated by the Swiss water method—is deceptively rich, she says. “We roasted this coffee a little darker so that every sip is a strong one that has you forgetting it’s unleaded.”
