New Midwifery Practice Serves Lower Hudson Valley
Gail Margarita Raymon
Perinatal consultant Gail Margarita Raymon has opened a new practice, Gentle Beginnings Midwifery, providing complete prenatal care and home-birth services in the lower Hudson Valley. Raymon has more than twenty years’ experience in holistic care as a certified nurse-midwife and certified lactation counselor.
“Midwife means ‘with woman,’” Raymon says, “and that perspective of personalized care during birth extends in either direction of the childbearing year.” For example, while an annual Ob-Gyn exam traditionally meant a Pap test, today’s well-woman visit includes nutritional counseling, hormonal and cardiovascular evaluation, and optimizing preconception and general fitness levels, as well as gynecology. Gentle Beginnings Midwifery also offers care and perinatal consultations for pregnant women and new mothers through classes, workshops, support and counseling.
Perinatal consultation services are available to all, not just those in Raymon’s homebirth practice. They include comprehensive breastfeeding support, childbirth preparation (including classes in HypnoBirthing, to facilitate a more comfortable, easier birth experience), and film showings. “A recent showing of MicroBirth looked at how childbirth affects the human biome,” Raymon says. “Upcoming films will feature physiological birth and waterbirth.” Postpartum, mothers can learn to breastfeed with up-to-date information and avoid common problems. Some women also opt to use placental encapsulation for a smoother adjustment after childbirth; a pick-up and delivery service is available.
