Free Support Group for Elder Caregivers Begins September 6

Grace Cognetta

Grace Cognetta, RN, will lead a free support group for elder caregivers in the Somers office of Elder Care Connection starting September 6. The group will meet every other Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and end on November 29. Cognetta, a former hospice nurse and case manager who has provided care for four of her own family members since 2000, says she’s bringing the group back by popular demand. “Our first support group was such a success that we have decided to do it again,” she says. “I’m inviting all caregivers to join the group to learn how to better prepare for what’s to come.”

As someone who has experienced the stresses of caregiving both professionally and personally, Cognetta offers a unique approach to families dealing with dementia, stroke, chronic illness and terminal care, and she places a big emphasis on planning, says Dora Vignola, coordinator for Elder Care Connection. “Not having a solid plan in place when caring for your loved one can be very stressful,” she says.

“It is never too late to plan—that should always be the first step,” Cognetta says. “Our support group will host different speakers to further explain the options you may have when it comes to planning for your loved one’s care.”
