The annual Friends of Lasdon Plant Sale and Garden Show will be held May 19 and 20 at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial, located at 2610 Amawalk Road (Route 35), in Somers. The sale will feature a broad selection of colorful annuals, including many hard-to-find and popular favorites that are easy to plant and care for. There will also be more than 30 vendors selling crafts, food, gifts and other items.

Admission and parking for the plant sale are free. A conservatory exhibit, “The Color of Summer,” will be open to visitors for an additional $7 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Tickets for the conservatory can be purchased at the Shop at Lasdon.

The sale hours are May 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and May 20, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On May 18, from 6 to 8 p.m., there will be special preview for members of the Friends of Lasdon Park & Arboretum. FLPA is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization formed for the purpose of aiding in the development of Lasdon Park and Arboretum, which is owned and operated by Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation.

William and Mildred Lasdon originally acquired the estate in 1939. Its main house, built in 1933, is modeled after George Washington’s home in Virginia. The Lasdons were interested in horticulture and travel, and planted many foreign tree specimens on the estate. In 1976, William Lasdon created a 22-acre preserve and bird sanctuary, which was donated to the county.



After his death in 1986, Westchester County purchased the estate in order to preserve the land and history of the area. While the formal grounds remain as they were designed initially, Westchester County has added embellishments to the estate, such as the Famous and Historic Tree Trail and the Chinese Friendship Pavilion and Culture Garden, which was donated by Westchester’s Chinese sister city, Jingzhou.

The garden is open to the public seven days a week. It hosts a variety of events, such as weddings, antique shows, flower exhibits, concerts and horticulture courses.
