Susan Adler Adds Reflexology to Massage Practice: “Reflexology is based on the premise that the foot is a map of the whole body, where specific areas on the foot correspond to different organs, glands and body systems.”

Susan Adler, a licensed massage therapist based in Mamaroneck, recently expanded her practice to include reflexology, a hands-on treatment of the feet. She completed her reflexology certification at Swedish Institute in Manhattan, through a program that included more than 100 hours of lecture, hands-on training and clinical practice.

“Reflexology is based on the premise that the foot is a map of the whole body, where specific areas on the foot correspond to different organs, glands and body systems,” Adler says. “The reflexologist applies finger pressure to these areas with the aim of reducing the physiological effects of stress on the body so that the body can enter a state of relaxation. When the body is relaxed, it can function at its best and is better able to heal.”

She says she became interested in pursuing certification in reflexology when she experienced its “deeply relaxing” effect.

In addition to offering reflexology sessions, Adler sees private clients on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays in her general massage practice in Mamaroneck, or in clients’ homes in Southern Westchester and the Bronx. She is certified in oncology massage and works two days a week with cancer patients in Manhattan at New York University Langone Health’s Perlmutter Cancer Center.
