Fair Trade Festival December 1 in White Plains: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., December 1

Nada Khader, WESPAC Director, exhibiting fair trade items at the festival

The Margaret Eberle Fair Trade Festival and Crafts Sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., December 1, at Memorial United Methodist Church, in White Plains. This local event, which has become an annual tradition, offers an array of unusual and affordable items that are “created and sold with a conscience.”

Items for sale include handmade pottery, beadwork, baskets, clothing and fabrics, jewelry, art, aromatherapy and body-care products, organic beauty products, and organic chocolate, cocoa, coffee and tea. The sale of these products benefits the artists who created them, whether they are local or from Asia, Africa or South America. Many of the crafts are made by artists in women-managed cooperatives. Funds raised help support a living wage and better living conditions.

Some of the festival proceeds this year will go to the Hudson Valley Community Coalition, which works to protect the rights of local immigrants, especially those with loved ones facing deportation.

The event will include live music throughout the day, featuring saxophonist Art Bennett, Jenny Murphy, the LOFT Pride Chorus and the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus. Homemade baked goods, hot food, bread and fair trade coffee and tea will be available for purchase.

Cost: $5 suggested donation for admission. Location: 250 Bryant Ave., White Plains, NY. For more info, call 914.949.2146.
