Integrity Chiropractic, in Mahopac, is now offering percussion therapy for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. According to clinic owner Dr. Jodi Kennedy, benefits of this noninvasive treatment include improved range of motion, decreased pain and improved strength.

“Percussion therapy is a highly effective technique that involves tapping the jaw in eight positions as it moves through the motions of talking, chewing, eating and swallowing,” she says. “It breaks up the internal stiffness and adhesions within the bone, much like tenderizing a piece of meat.”

Common activities like jaw clenching, an altered bite or even poor posture from texting can cause the bones in the jaw to compress and develop internal or intra-osseous subluxations, Kennedy says. These areas around the compressed jawbones become tight and sore, causing loss of motion over time.

“Many patients with chronic TMJ problems that have not responded to other forms of treatment are now experiencing significant relief with the addition of percussion therapy,” she says. “In fact, I’ve found percussion therapy to be very effective with my patients for a wide variety of problems. They can be taught this simple technique for use on other areas of the body to restore pain-free range of motion.”
