Every month, Westchester residents are gathering to Walk with a Doc (WWAD)—getting exercise while learning health information from Dr. Kurt Beil, a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist in Mount Kisco. The walk is held from 10 to 11 a.m. every second Saturday, rain or shine, at Gedney Park in Chappaqua. Anyone may participate free of charge.

Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist with Mount Carmel Health Systems in Columbus, Ohio, created WWAD in 2003 to encourage physical activity and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. Now the nonprofit organization has more than 500 programs around the world.

“WWAD allows people of all ages and walking abilities to get together as a community, to spend time outside walking together and learning about important health topics. This program has had tremendous participation and success in hundreds of cities around the country, and I’m very pleased to bring it to Northern Westchester,” says Beil, who also has a degree in public health.

“We know that increasing exercise, even moderately, improves health and reduces the risks of many conditions, including heart disease, breast and colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and depression. Research has shown that you can gain two hours of life for every hour of regular exercise. So consider coming out and joining the community that is Walking with a Doc for greater health and well-being. Bring your family and friends, or meet new people there.”
