Zen Zone Sensory Gym Now Open in Croton-on-Hudson: "It’s a place for children of all abilities, a progressively designed play and learning space that inspires everybody to be truly present while having fun.”

Melissa Wassil and Margie Ferris

Zen Zone Sensory Gym, a unique indoor playground and learning center for children, is now open seven days a week in Croton-on-Hudson. Owners Margie Ferris, a longtime speech-language pathologist in New York City and Westchester, and Melissa Wassil, teacher and director at Sunset Nursery School in Montrose, say that in developing Zen Zone, they consulted with occupational therapists, physical therapists and the growing body of scientific research on the benefits of mindfulness.

“The two of us envisioned Zen Zone for years before we met,” Ferris says. “Once we realized that we shared the same dream, we set out to create a fun and welcoming space where families can simply be. It’s a place for children of all abilities, a progressively designed play and learning space that inspires everybody to be truly present while having fun.”

While kids can get plenty of physical exercise on the gym’s swings, traverse rock wall, jungle jumparoo, wiggle car track and other equipment, Ferris says everyone can benefit from the space’s soft lighting, soothing colors, gentle sounds, calming scents and sensory-rich textures. There are also cozy “sensory break teepees, where kids can just chill out,” she says.

Zen Zone offers open gym play sessions (with discounts for siblings, babies and multi-session purchases); mindful birthday parties; enrichment groups for all ages; and occupational, physical and speech/language screenings, evaluations and therapies.
