“The earth has a fever, and it gets hotter every year. What is New York doing about this?” asks Johanna Fallert of Mothers Out Front–Dutchess County.

On October 13, from 1 to 3:30 p.m., the environmental advocacy organization will take that question public with Earth to Cuomo: The Rally for New York’s Climate, at Waryas Park, in Poughkeepsie.

While the rally will include family fun, live music and food trucks, Fallert says, it will also send a strong message to Gov. Cuomo from his constituents. “We will voice our concerns about climate warming and the threat to health and the environment from the emissions of fracked gas power plants, pipelines and infrastructure throughout New York,” she says.

Speakers will include Dr. David O. Carpenter, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany; Liz Moran, environmental policy director of the New York Public Interest Research Group; and actor and activist Tim Guinee.

At 7 p.m. on October 12, the day before the rally, Vassar College will host a public screening of Unfractured, a documentary that follows biologist and mother Sandra Steingraber as she reinvents herself as an outspoken activist and throws herself into an environmental war that many believe is unwinnable. Doug Couchon, also a subject of the film, will facilitate a Q&A after the screening, and there will be a wine and cheese reception afterwards.

Locations: Waryas Park, Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY; Spitzer Auditorium, Vassar College, Sanders Hall, #212, 124 Raymond Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY. For more info, visit ny.mothersoutfront.org/earth2cuomo.
