Halloween’s origins date back 2,000 years, to when the Celts celebrated the start of winter and their New Year, Samhain—a time when they thought the veil between worlds of the living and the dead was lifted. Through the later rise of Christianity, the addition of All Saint’s Day and All Soul’s Day (November 1 and 2) put more focus on honoring the dead, and the celebration came to be called All-Hallow’s Eve, and eventually Halloween.
