The Third Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Rhinebeck, is hosting their annual Blessing of the Animals event from noon to 4 p.m., May 18, 2024 (rain date is from 1 to 5 p.m., May 19). This year there will also be a Pet Remembrance Tree, which will be placed in front of the church on May 5, 2024, Decorations for this loving six-foot-high tribute tree for pets that have passed away are being collected now.
All furred, finned, scaled and feathered friends are invited to attend the blessing with their companion people. To ensure the safety of all, animal ambassadors must be properly escorted, leashed, kenneled or harnessed. Pooper scooper laws do apply and pickup bags will be available.
The day will also feature other free, family-friendly activities to enjoy, including meeting and greeting animal ambassadors representing local shelters and rescue groups; interacting with local service animals; taking a chance in an onsite raffle to support the charity American Humane; spending time with rescued farm animals; and visiting with various environmental groups.
In advance of May 5, there will be a marked drop-off box under the covered office entrance near the church’s mailbox. Tributes can be placed in the marked box, hand delivered to the church on Sunday mornings or mailed to the church office. Items can also be placed directly on the tree starting May 1, 2024.
