For Women, Self-Care Is a Health Investment: Silverman believes society lacks adequate support for women who are stretched too thin.

Self-care is challenging for today’s women, who often juggle career and family, and are “hardwired” to be caretakers, says Jane Silverman, a life coach in Positive Psychology.

Silverman believes society lacks adequate support for women who are stretched too thin. As a result, they experience chronic stress, which ultimately leads to health issues. “I see many women who are in dire need of self-care. By their forties and fifties, many have developed autoimmune diseases like lupus, Sjogren’s disease, MS or some combination, or other health issues such as adrenal fatigue, thyroid problems and chronic fatigue.”

Women should view self-care as an investment in their health rather than a luxury, she says.

“We must fill our own well before filling others’, as we can’t fill others’ when we are depleted. That means saying no when we need to, or creating better boundaries for people or activities that are energy drains. And we can add, even in small ways, that which nourishes us as women.”

To prevent illness and burnout, she suggests feeding the body with healthy food; feeding the spirit with creative outlets and quiet time; and accepting or asking for support, either from friends and family or from a professional.

Silverman provides consultations at her office, located at 66 Main St., Bedford Hills, NY, as well as by phone, FaceTime or Skype. She offers a free half-hour phone consult. Contact her at 914.263.7080 or [email protected]. For more info, visit JaneSilvermanLifeCoach.com.
