Floatation therapy, often termed as a “float spa”, involves floating effortlessly in tanks filled with Epsom salt and water, promoting relaxation and sensory deprivation. This therapy, discovered in the 1950s, induces deep relaxation by removing sensory stimulation. Participants float in darkness, akin to being suspended in space, triggering a meditative state that reduces stress, anxiety and depression.
Micah Saccomanno, owner at Rise Above Floatation, in Mount Kisco, New York, explains that floating in an Epsom salt solution is effortless and safe and doesn’t require any swimming skills. “Regardless of one’s shape or size, the dense Epsom salt solution will enable everyone to float,” he assures. “Floatation therapy has also been proven to reduce pain from conditions such as arthritis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, back pain, and overall inflammation. Many studies have also supported the idea that a person may experience a boost in creativity after floating. Further, the experience can decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels.”
During a session, clients have the option to lock the door to their room for added privacy and security, with staff retaining access for emergencies. They also have control over the lights in the room and the tank, allowing them to adjust settings as desired. The door to the pod closes only when manually shut by the client, with the option to open it manually in case of an emergency, ensuring a completely private experience. Each client has their own float room equipped with a private shower and float tank, offering solitude and comfort.
“Potential feelings of claustrophobia are reduced via the sheer size of the float rooms and control measures as users can stand up, control the LED ceiling lights that resemble stars, or float in complete darkness,” says Saccomanno, adding that although many notice results after their first float session, some will notice improvements after their second or third.
The facility strives to provide everything needed for a complete floating experience, including towels, slippers, shampoo, conditioner, Q-Tips, cotton swabs, earplugs and a hair dryer in the bathrooms. Furthermore, the tanks undergo rigorous cleaning procedures to maintain hygiene standards. The tanks are automatically self-cleaned between clients using a specific filter system. Additionally, the pH levels of the tanks are checked and adjusted daily to maintain optimal cleanliness, and sodium hypochlorite is used to ensure cleanliness.
Saccomanno was drawn to the many benefits that floatation therapy has to offer and established the business in 2015, pioneering this therapy in Westchester County. He invites those ready to unlock deep relaxation and wellness to experience the transformative power of floatation therapy at Rise Above Floatation.
